Sarcoma Awareness Month

Raising Awareness for a Rare Cancer

What is Sarcoma?

Every July, Sarcoma Awareness Month shines a light on a rare group of cancers that develop in the body’s connective tissues, including bones, muscles, fat, blood vessels, nerves, tendons, and cartilage. Although sarcomas account for only about 1% of adult cancers, they can affect people of all ages, including children and young adults. Early recognition and timely treatment can significantly improve outcomes.

Recognizing the Signs and Symptoms

Sarcoma symptoms often depend on where the tumors develops. Common warning signs include:

  • A lump or swelling that continues to grow
  • Persistent bone pain, especially at night
  • Pain or tenderness around a lump
  • Difficulty moving a limb or joint
  • Unexplained fractures caused by weakened bones

Because these symptoms can resemble less serious conditions, it is important not to ignore any persistent or unusual changes in your body.

Diagnosis and Treatment

If sarcoma is suspected, your healthcare provider may recommend imaging tests such as X-rays, MRI, or CT scans, followed by a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. Treatment varies depending on the type, size, and stage of the cancer and may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, or a combination of these approaches. A multidisciplinary team plays a vital role in creating an individualized treatment plan.

Why Awareness Matters

Raising awareness about sarcoma helps promote earlier diagnosis, encourages research, and supports individuals and families affected by this rare disease. Learning the warning signs and seeking medical evaluation for persistent symptoms can make a meaningful difference.

This Sarcoma Awareness Month, take a moment to educate yourself, share reliable information, and support those impacted by Sarcoma. Together, we can help improve awareness, advance research, and give hope to patients and their loved ones.
